Summer 2004 was not too spectacular in regard NLC-observing. Weather was a bit towards rainy side and there were not too many totally clear nights. Observing was carried out between 6th June - 14th August. In June sky I found 6 displays, in July 19 and in August 6; i.e. total of 31 positive sightings. However, many of these were seen among ordinary clouds and could not be observed properly. There were also 6 genuine negative observations in July - August 14th (i.e. clear sky and no NLC could be seen while observing continued 'til morning hours 02:30 local time).
Two displays are worth mentioning:
In June 17-18 a bright display shone in a very bright summer sky. Had this occured in July in darker sky it might have turned out to be exceptional. (Veils on the five first rows rows on this page.)
Night August 6-7 revealed one of the most beautiful displays in my 30 years of NLC-observing. Using the slide film Kodak Extra Color (EBX) made pictures even more conspicious due to low display and strong red night twillight. (See next page.)
I have posted a very thorought collection of those 'better nights' 2004. June 17/18 was such a light night that I could use a fast telephoto lens to pick up some details of the brightest parts of the veil . (Normally later in the summer in darker skies the exposure times become too long and the fine structure of the clouds is softened due to the cloud drift.)
