This page shows islands distorted by superior mirage with a boat in scenery (not distorted). There was some general discussion of superior mirages on page 1.
Keep in mind that sailors in boats hardly see any mirages because they are at wrong height. Seeing this kind of superior mirages is very sensitive to observer's distance from the inversion layer (layer of hot air above cold air). Mirage may completely disappear, if observer's height is one meter too high or too low.
